Dhaka witnessed a tragic incident when 25-year-old Shahidul Islam died after falling from a rooftop in the Kalabagan area, following a dispute related to his romantic relationship. Shahidul, a native of South Majpara village in Dhobaura, Mymensingh district, was the son of Chan Mia and had been residing in Dhaka with his elder brother, Rafiqul Islam.
Sub-Inspector Ariful Islam of Kalabagan Police Station reported that Shahidul had developed a romantic relationship with a 14-year-old girl named Hasi from Narayanganj. On 11 February, the pair ran away from Narayanganj and arrived in Dhaka, staying at Shahidul’s brother’s home. In consultation with the couple, Shahidul’s elder brother began preparations for their marriage.
However, the girl’s family soon learned of the intended marriage and positioned themselves below the house. When Shahidul went downstairs, he noticed their presence. Pursued by a relative he identified as his “khalu shoshur” (uncle-in-law), Shahidul attempted to escape by climbing upstairs. In the process, he reportedly jumped onto a neighbouring building but lost his footing, falling to the ground and sustaining fatal injuries.
Shahidul’s body was recovered by police at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue on Sunday morning. After completion of post-mortem formalities, the body will be handed over to his family.
The relationship between Shahidul and Hasi was primarily conducted through Facebook. Given the girl’s minor age, she was returned to her family following proper legal procedures. Authorities emphasised that no legal action against Shahidul could continue due to his death, but the incident has raised wider concerns about underage relationships, elopements, and legal safeguards for minors.
