Young Man Fatally Shot Near Dhaka Shaheed Minar

A shocking act of violence occurred near Dhaka’s central Shaheed Minar on Sunday evening, 15 March, when 25-year-old Md. Rakib died from injuries sustained during a brutal attack. The victim was reportedly both shot and stabbed, and succumbed while receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

According to eyewitness accounts, the attack took place at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the Shaheed Minar area. Three to four unidentified assailants reportedly ambushed Rakib, shooting him in the head before stabbing him in the left side of his abdomen. Passersby quickly intervened, rushing the severely injured man to DMCH’s One-Stop Emergency Centre, where he was pronounced dead around 10:30 p.m.

Md. Faruk, Officer-in-Charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed Rakib’s death and stated that the police are continuing their investigation to identify all those involved in the attack.

Rakib, a resident of Shahbagh’s Shivbari Staff Quarter, was the son of Md. Khokon. He worked professionally as a content creator, and his sudden and violent death has sent shockwaves through the local community, leaving friends, family, and neighbours deeply mourning.

Eyewitness Md. Ishan described the terrifying incident:

“Suddenly, three to four men attacked Rakib. They shot him in the head and then stabbed him in the left side of his stomach before fleeing. We, along with other bystanders, rushed him to the hospital, but sadly, he could not be saved.”

The gunfire caused immediate panic in the vicinity, as pedestrians and residents scrambled to safety. Local people quickly mobilised to assist Rakib, ensuring he received urgent medical attention.

Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division, confirmed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. He added that the investigation remains ongoing to determine the full circumstances and apprehend all individuals responsible.
