Youth Fatally Stabbed by Assailants in Lalbagh

A young man named Md Riaz, aged 35, tragically lost his life after being stabbed by unidentified assailants in the Lalbagh area of the capital on Thursday evening. The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 PM on 11 December, near the bustling Lalbagh Thana Chowrasta, a location usually crowded with pedestrians and small businesses.

According to witnesses, panic rippled through the area when several residents heard a commotion followed by desperate cries for help. Moments later, Riaz was found lying on the pavement in a critically injured state, covered in blood, near the front of the popular Banoful Sweet Shop—one of the busiest storefronts in the vicinity.

He was immediately rescued by a local resident, Md Sinha, who recounted the harrowing scene. Sinha said that Riaz had collapsed on the roadside after sustaining multiple stab wounds and was struggling to breathe. With help from nearby shopkeepers and passers-by, Sinha rushed him to the Emergency Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). However, despite urgent medical attention, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Riaz, a long-time local resident, lived at House 4/5 in Lane 8, close to Lalbagh Chowrasta. He was the son of Abdus Salam, a known figure in the neighbourhood. Relatives described Riaz as a gentle and hard-working man with no known enemies. His sudden and violent death has therefore sent shockwaves across the community.

Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed the death and informed the media that the body has been kept at the DMCH morgue for post-mortem examination. He also stated that Lalbagh Police Station has been notified and that an investigation is now underway.

Law enforcement officials are examining several possibilities, including whether the attack stemmed from a personal dispute, a mugging attempt gone wrong, or involvement by organised crime groups known to be active in certain parts of Old Dhaka. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby shops and interviewing witnesses to piece together the moments leading to the fatal assault.

The incident has left local residents deeply unsettled. Many have expressed concern about increasing street crime in the area and have urged authorities to strengthen evening patrols and enhance public safety measures. Community leaders have also called for swift arrests to restore residents’ confidence.
