A 32-year-old man, Sekandar Ali, was fatally stabbed in Dhaka’s Shantibagh area after reportedly attempting to prevent drug use. He succumbed to his injuries on Monday night, 9 March, while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The incident occurred in the city’s notorious 17 Number Bhangari Alley, a lane known for illicit activities.
According to Sekandar’s brother, Amir Ali, the attack involved multiple local drug dealers, including individuals identified as Mamun and Hannan. “Sekandar confronted them for using drugs in the neighbourhood. In retaliation, they attacked him together with sharp weapons,” Amir said. Despite being rushed to hospital, Sekandar’s injuries proved fatal.
Shahjahanpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Md. Amirul Islam, stated that preliminary investigations have identified three to four suspects allegedly involved in the brutal killing. “Efforts to apprehend them are ongoing,” he added. He also confirmed that the family has filed a case listing six to seven individuals as accused.
Inspector Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, detailed the victim’s injuries: “Sekandar sustained multiple lacerations across his body, particularly to the head, caused by sharp instruments. The police immediately commenced an investigation.”
Police reports indicate that the alley’s poor surveillance infrastructure complicated initial evidence collection. However, local residents assisted authorities in quickly identifying the perpetrators.
The victim’s family claims that Sekandar was targeted for standing against drug abuse and associated violence in the area. They are urging law enforcement to act swiftly to ensure justice and prevent similar incidents.
