Yasin Sharif Majumdar, convener of the Parshuram Upazila unit of the Awami Jubo League in Feni, was granted temporary parole on Monday to attend his father’s funeral. The funeral prayer (janaza) took place at 11:00 am at the Sixghoria Eidgah ground in East Anantapur, under strict police supervision.
According to family sources, Yasin’s father, Rafiqul Islam Majumdar, passed away on Sunday afternoon at his residence in Parshuram after a prolonged illness. Following his father’s death, the family promptly applied for parole so that Yasin could attend the janaza and pay his final respects. The district magistrate approved a three-hour parole, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Under police escort, Yasin participated in the funeral, offered prayers for his father’s soul, and received condolences from relatives and local residents. He was subsequently returned to custody once the ceremony concluded.
Personal and Political Background
Yasin Sharif Majumdar is the nephew of Kamal Uddin Majumdar, former chairman of Parshuram Upazila Parishad and current president of the Upazila Awami League. He is also the son-in-law of Kamal Uddin Majumdar’s eldest daughter. Over the years, Yasin has held multiple significant positions in local governance and social organisations, including chairman of the Parshuram BRDB and general secretary of the Upazila Sports Association. He has also served as the president of the now-banned Parshuram Upazila Chhatra League, highlighting his longstanding involvement in regional political and community activities.
Parshuram Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Ashraful Islam confirmed to Dhaka Post that Yasin’s parole was granted specifically to attend his father’s janaza and burial. After the funeral, he was returned to prison under police supervision.
Yasin was previously arrested on 30 July last year in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi-32 area in connection with a case related to anti-discrimination protests. Monday’s temporary parole allowed him a rare opportunity to participate in family mourning while ensuring compliance with legal protocols.
