In a shocking incident in Shibganj Upazila of Chapainawabganj, 25-year-old Abu Sufian, also known as Siju, was brutally attacked by several assailants who tied him to an electric pole and hacked him with machetes. According to doctors, the young man suffered near-severance of both hands and one leg. The local police have registered a case at Shibganj Police Station and arrested two individuals allegedly associated with Jamaat-e-Islami.
The victim, Abu Sufian Siju, is the son of Robiul Islam from Bajitpur village in Shyampur area of Shibganj. The arrested suspects are Shah Alam, 22, and his brother Abdur Razzak, 23, residents of Khochpara village in Shyampur. Razzak is a madrasa teacher and also runs a pharmacy near the site of the attack at Umarpur Ghat. Local sources say that although the brothers hold no official positions within Jamaat, they frequently participated in the party’s rallies and gatherings.
The attack reportedly stems from a personal dispute. Siju’s cousin’s daughter had a romantic relationship with a young man named Mostak from a neighbouring area, leading to a runaway marriage. When the girl’s father accused her of being underage, both were imprisoned but later released on bail. The girl then returned to Siju’s household. Recent attempts by Mostak to forcibly take the girl again led to confrontations with Siju. Although locals initially intervened to calm tensions, the situation escalated on 24 December when Siju was standing on a bridge at Umarpur Ghat and was viciously attacked. He was rushed first to Chapainawabganj District Hospital and later referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. He is now receiving treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute in Dhaka.
In an interview from hospital, Siju claimed the attack was premeditated and lasted nearly 90 minutes. He implicated Abdur Razzak, Anwar from Sharatnagar, and Nur, brother of poultry trader Abu Saeed, among others. His father filed a case naming three individuals and 12–15 unidentified attackers. Police have so far arrested two suspects.
Siju is reportedly a known local gang leader with prior charges of extortion and robbery. His arrest sparked a protest on 26 December in Chama Bazar, Shyampur Union, organised under the banner of the ‘Shyampur Union Anti-Terrorism Alliance’.

Police continue to investigate and search for the remaining suspects. Shibganj Police Station officials emphasise that the arrests were based on involvement in the attack rather than political affiliation.
