In a shocking incident in Patharghata Upazila of Barguna district, a local Jamaat leader was brutally assaulted and severely injured after being thrown from his motorcycle. The victim, identified as Mahfuzur Rahman, sustained serious injuries to both legs, along with trauma to his left arm and head. The attack occurred on Tuesday around 1:30 pm near the Bayar Khuti Bridge, close to the Kathaltoli Dakhil Madrasa.
Mahfuzur Rahman serves as the Jamaat Amir of Ward No. 9 in Kathaltoli Union and also heads the primary (Ibtidai) section of Kathaltoli Dakhil Madrasa. According to Sharif Abdur Rahman, the madrasa superintendent, Mahfuzur was severely injured and has been admitted to hospital for urgent medical care.
Eyewitness accounts from the madrasa reveal that Mahfuzur left the madrasa at approximately 1:00 pm on his motorcycle, heading home. Upon reaching the Bayar Khuti Bridge, three assailants attacked him. He was accompanied at the time by a junior cleric, Rafiqul Islam.
Speaking to local media, Sharif Abdur Rahman recounted Rafiqul Islam’s account: “As soon as Mahfuzur Rahman reached the Bayar Khuti Bridge, three young men struck him with sticks and iron rods, forcing him off his motorcycle. They repeatedly attacked his legs, breaking them, and also inflicted blows to his right forehead and left arm.” Following the assault, local residents came to his aid and rushed him to Patharghata Upazila Health Complex.
Dr Mahmudul Hasan, a physician at the health complex, confirmed that Mahfuzur Rahman had sustained severe injuries to both legs and trauma to the head. He added that for specialised treatment, Mahfuzur has been advised to transfer to the National Orthopaedic Hospital & Rehabilitation Institute in Dhaka.
Patharghata police have acknowledged the incident. Officer-in-Charge Monchenla stated: “We are aware of the incident. Action will be taken once a formal complaint is lodged.”
The violent attack has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns over law and order in the area. Madrasa authorities have urged local administration and police to ensure the safety of community leaders and to expedite legal action against the perpetrators.
