What should have been a routine exercise of democratic duty turned into a moment of distress for Nurjahan Begum, a long-time voter, when she was informed that her vote had already been cast—despite her standing in the polling booth, ballot-ready.
The incident occurred at approximately 12 noon on Thursday, 12 February, at the Teyani Moniram Government Primary School polling centre in Pirgacha Upazila. Nurjahan Begum, who has participated in numerous elections over the years, arrived at the centre with the quiet confidence of a citizen exercising her constitutional right. Instead, she was met with a startling declaration from a polling officer: “Your vote has already been given.”
Emerging from the booth visibly shaken and in tears, she told reporters in a trembling voice, “I have voted in every election for years without any difficulty. This time they say someone else has voted in my place. I came to cast my vote myself.”
Her emotional reaction quickly drew attention, prompting murmurs and visible unease both inside and outside the polling station. Several local residents alleged that similar irregularities had been occurring sporadically since morning, with some voters reportedly discovering that their ballots had already been recorded before they arrived.
Local resident Zahurul Islam stated, “We have been hearing since morning that some voters were told their votes had already been cast. This is deeply concerning and undermines confidence in the process.”
Another voter, Rahima Khatun, voiced her frustration: “If we come to vote and are told it has already been done, where do we go? It is our fundamental right.”
In response, Presiding Officer Monchur Hossain acknowledged the complaint, suggesting that the issue may have arisen due to failures by polling agents to properly verify voter identities. “There may have been lapses in identification. We are looking into the matter to ensure such incidents do not recur,” he said.
Assistant Returning Officer and Pirgacha Upazila Executive Officer Debashish Basak confirmed that the allegation is under investigation. “If the complaint is substantiated, appropriate legal measures will be taken,” he assured.
Although tensions briefly escalated at the centre following the incident, the presence of law enforcement personnel helped restore order.
