Cabrera Optimistic Over Hamza Return

Concerns surrounding Bangladesh’s midfield have eased considerably, as head coach Javier Cabrera expressed growing optimism about the timely return of Hamza Choudhury for two crucial upcoming fixtures against Vietnam and Singapore.

The Leicester City midfielder, widely regarded as a pivotal figure in Bangladesh’s national setup, has been sidelined since the first week of the month due to injury. Initial medical assessments suggested a recovery period of six to eight weeks, raising fears that he might miss both international engagements in March. However, recent updates indicate a far more encouraging trajectory.

Speaking to journalists during an iftar gathering organised by the Bangladesh Sports Press Association at Paltan Handball Stadium, Cabrera revealed that he has maintained consistent communication with both the player and Leicester City’s medical staff. According to the coach, Hamza’s rehabilitation is progressing “very well”, with a projected return to full training by mid-March.

If recovery continues as planned, Hamza could feature in Bangladesh’s friendly match against Vietnam on 26 March, followed by the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore on 31 March. Cabrera hinted that, depending on logistics, the midfielder may travel directly to Vietnam rather than joining the squad in Dhaka beforehand.

Beyond Hamza, Cabrera also shared positive developments regarding another overseas-based footballer, Shamit Shome. The coach confirmed that regular communication has been ongoing and that the player has expressed a strong desire to join the national team. Cabrera hopes Shome will be able to begin training with the squad from the initial camp in Dhaka.

The national team is expected to commence its preliminary training camp around 16 March, shortly after domestic league fixtures conclude on 14 March. Following several training sessions in the capital, the squad will depart for Vietnam as part of their preparations.

Cabrera acknowledged that facing Vietnam—currently ranked 108th in the FIFA standings—will present a significant challenge for Bangladesh. He emphasised that matches against higher-ranked opponents are essential for the team’s development, particularly with the SAFF Championship looming later in the year. The Bangladesh Football Federation has endorsed his strategy of scheduling more competitive fixtures.

On his own future, the Spanish coach adopted a measured stance. With approximately two months remaining on his contract, he indicated that discussions regarding an extension would take place only after the Singapore match. “There is no need to rush,” Cabrera remarked, underscoring the importance of focusing on immediate priorities.

Reflecting on his four-and-a-half-year tenure in Bangladesh, Cabrera spoke warmly of his experiences, particularly the cultural richness of Ramadan and local festivities. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work closely with players and staff, describing his time in the country as both professionally rewarding and personally enriching.

Cabrera also extended his best wishes to the Bangladesh women’s national team ahead of their Asian Cup campaign in Australia. Confident in their resilience and fighting spirit, he voiced hope that they would deliver a commendable performance on the continental stage. Additionally, he paid tribute to International Mother Language Day, expressing deep admiration for the Bangla language and its cultural significance.
