Bangladeshi expatriates residing in France recently gathered to observe International Mother Language and Shaheed Day, honouring the historic 1952 Language Movement and its martyrs. The event was marked by solemnity and reverence, highlighting the diaspora’s commitment to preserving the Bengali language and cultural heritage far from home. The celebration was organised by the Bangladeshi Citizens’ Council of France, a community body dedicated to promoting mother tongue literacy and cultural activities among expatriates.
The ceremony took place at the traditional Pansi Grill Restaurant in the Gare du Nord area, drawing members of the Bangladeshi community for an open discussion session and a communal Iftar gathering. The programme commenced with prayers for the departed language martyrs, seeking blessings and paying homage to their sacrifice.
In his keynote address, Abul Khayer Loskor, the Council President, emphasised the historic significance of the Language Movement and the enduring responsibility of expatriates to safeguard the mother tongue. He remarked, “Even while living abroad, our duty to preserve our language is immense. It is our responsibility to cultivate interest in Bengali language and culture among the younger generation.” The event was hosted by Secretary General Mohammad Ibrahim Bhuiya.
