Inspector Shot in Capital Drug Raid

A senior officer of the Department of Narcotics Control was shot and injured during a special anti-drug operation in the capital on Monday, underlining once again the hazards faced by law enforcement personnel tackling organised narcotics networks.

Inspector Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman, 38, sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg while leading a raid near the Sayedabad Bus Terminal at approximately midday on 2 March. The operation formed part of a five-day citywide crackdown aimed at disrupting drug trafficking routes and apprehending key operatives.

According to eyewitness accounts, a team acting on confidential intelligence had identified three suspected traffickers in the vicinity of the railway tracks adjacent to the busy transport hub. As officers moved in to detain one of the suspects, the group allegedly produced a firearm and discharged four rounds in quick succession. Inspector Rahman was struck below the knee during the exchange.

The sudden sound of gunfire triggered panic among commuters, shopkeepers and pedestrians in the densely populated area. Additional officers swiftly cordoned off the scene to restore order and secure evidence. However, the suspects managed to flee amid the confusion. A coordinated manhunt is now under way, with investigators reviewing surveillance footage and gathering witness statements.

Inspector Rahman was transported without delay to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and admitted to the emergency department at 12:55 pm before being transferred to Ward Four. Hospital authorities confirmed that the bullet did not strike a life-threatening area and that his condition is stable. He remains under close medical supervision.

Officials believe the Sayedabad area has long served as a strategic corridor for narcotics distribution, owing to its extensive bus and rail connections that facilitate rapid movement across districts. From 1 to 5 March, seven dedicated enforcement teams have been deployed across high-risk zones in the capital as part of the intensified drive.
