Three people, including a father and his teenage son, were killed and another person was injured after a moving truck crashed into a stationary truck on the Dhaka–Bogura Highway in Bogura on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred at around 7.30am in the Chhilmupur area of Bogura city, in front of the Palli Bidyut office. Police said one of the victims was 35-year-old Tapas Sarkar, son of Ananda Sarkar from Ramchandrapur village in Sherpur upazila, while the other was his 18-year-old son, Tibro Sarkar. The identity of the third person killed in the crash had not been established immediately.
The injured person was identified as Nur Islam, reportedly a resident of Birampur in Dinajpur. He was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where he was receiving treatment.
According to local residents and police, a Dhaka-bound truck had broken down near the Palli Bidyut office in the early hours of Sunday. With the vehicle unable to continue, its driver and assistant pulled it towards the side of the highway and began working on the damaged wheel.
Tapas and his son Tibro had also arrived at the spot to help repair the truck. Family members said Tapas had asked his son to bring a spare wheel after the truck’s tyre became unusable. The two were working on the vehicle when the fatal collision occurred.
At that point, a Rangpur-bound truck travelling along the highway reportedly lost control and slammed into the rear of the stationary truck. The impact was severe, leaving the front section of the moving truck badly crushed. Three people at the scene, including Tapas and Tibro, sustained critical injuries and died at the site.
Nayan Ray, Tapas’s brother-in-law, said the father and son were engaged in repairing the damaged truck when the speeding vehicle came from behind and struck them. The force of the collision left little opportunity for those working beside the stationary vehicle to escape.
Bogura Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene after receiving information about the accident. Senior Station Officer Shahidul Islam said the cabin of the truck had been extensively damaged in the collision, making the rescue operation difficult. Firefighters worked to remove the bodies trapped inside the wreckage.
Police also reached the scene and took control of the situation. Sub-Inspector Munzur Morshed of Bogura Sadar Police Station said the crash initially caused congestion on the highway. Police and fire service personnel subsequently removed the damaged vehicles and scattered debris, allowing traffic to return to normal.
Police confirmed the identities of two of the three deceased and said efforts were under way to identify the remaining victim. The bodies are expected to be handed over to their families after the necessary legal procedures are completed.
The accident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by motorists and roadside workers when vehicles break down on busy highways. A stationary vehicle can become particularly hazardous if it is not positioned at a safe distance from moving traffic or adequately marked with warning signs.
Safety measures such as reflective warning triangles, hazard lights and sufficient clearance from the main traffic lane can help alert approaching drivers to a stranded vehicle. Such precautions become especially important during early morning hours, when visibility may be reduced and drivers may have less time to react to unexpected obstacles.
The Bogura crash therefore raises renewed concerns about the safe management of disabled vehicles on major highways, particularly where heavy trucks travel at speed.
