Vijay Refuses Cricket Until Honour Restored

Enamul Haque Vijay, the veteran Bangladeshi wicketkeeper-batsman, has taken a firm stand regarding his professional future, declaring that he will not participate in any domestic or international cricket matches until his reputation is officially restored.

Vijay’s name had surfaced on a list of players under suspicion for match-fixing during the 2025 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), which subsequently barred him from participating in the 2026 BPL season alongside a handful of other players. Despite this setback, it was initially expected that Vijay could continue to play in other domestic tournaments. However, following the recently concluded Adommo Bangladesh T20 Cup, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also denied him participation in the ongoing Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) One Day competition.

Speaking to the media on 3 March during the BCL final at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, the 33-year-old cricketer stated unequivocally that he values respect over remuneration. “I have played cricket for honour, not for money. I want my reputation restored. Until that happens, I will not play,” Vijay asserted.

He further clarified, “The accusations against me were entirely mistaken. I was on the suspect list, but this has been rectified. Now, I should be able to play in all formats. Once the BCB officially acknowledges that I am not guilty and restores my honour, I will return to the field.”

Vijay, who has represented Bangladesh in 77 matches across formats, expressed frustration at being left in limbo. “I ask the board to make a clear decision—either prove that I have done something wrong or officially state that I am innocent. Hanging in uncertainty is unacceptable. I have had enough. Until my honour is formally acknowledged, I will remain off the field,” he emphasised.

His statement has reignited debates about transparency and accountability in domestic cricket management, highlighting the need for timely resolution of disciplinary matters. Observers suggest that clarity from the BCB could allow Vijay, a seasoned campaigner, to once again contribute to Bangladesh cricket both as a player and as a mentor for younger athletes.
