A railway worker sustained serious injuries after unidentified individuals threw stones at a passenger train near Dulahajara Station in the Chakaria area of Cox’s Bazar, forcing authorities to halt the service and rush the victim to hospital. The incident occurred on Monday evening, 2 March, on the Dhaka-bound Tourist Express, which had departed from Cox’s Bazar.
The injured, Shaber Ahmad, 52, is employed as a bedding porter for Bangladesh Railway. His responsibilities include supplying sheets, pillows, and blankets to passengers across AC and other coaches. A resident of Banshkhali Upazila in Chattogram, Ahmad sustained severe head injuries when the train was targeted before reaching Dulahajara Station.
According to Farhad Chowdhury, Station Master at Saharbil, the attack occurred while the train was in motion. “A stone was thrown at the moving train, seriously injuring one of our staff,” he confirmed. Preliminary reports indicate that the assault took place along the railway stretch between Eidgaon and Chakaria, an area that has experienced repeated safety incidents.
Ahmad was initially admitted to Malumghat Christian Memorial Hospital with the assistance of colleagues. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred around 9 pm to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Doctors reportedly administered ten stitches to his head to address the injuries.
Mohammad Mostafa, Station Master of Dulahajara, stated that railway police have inspected the site. “Preliminary investigation indicates that the stone-throwing occurred on the track between Eidgaon and Chakaria. Legal action is underway,” he said, confirming that authorities are treating the incident as a criminal offence.
Railway officials stressed that throwing stones at moving trains is a grave crime, endangering the lives of passengers and staff alike. Such attacks have been repeatedly reported along the Cox’s Bazar–Chattogram railway line, particularly in and around Chakaria, prompting calls for urgent preventive measures.
“This is a recurring threat to those working on and around the railway,” a railway employee said. “We urge authorities to take immediate steps to prevent such attacks and ensure staff safety.”
