Global Stars Set For World Cup Opening Ceremonies

The highly anticipated football World Cup officially commences today, introducing an unprecedented structural change to its traditional opening format. Instead of a single-day celebration, the tournament will feature opening ceremonies spanning two consecutive days across three host nations: Mexico, Canada, and the United States. According to reports sourced via Al Jazeera, music will play a central role in these festivities, featuring an array of global icons, including Colombian pop sensation Shakira, American pop star Katy Perry, Blackpink member Lisa, and Bangladeshi-American DJ Sanjay.

Mexico City: 11 June

The inaugural celebrations begin on 11 June at the Mexico City Stadium, ahead of the tournament’s opening match where host nation Mexico will face South Africa. The opening ceremony is designed to celebrate Mexican heritage, blending indigenous artistic performances with modern folk expressions. A central visual highlight will be the integration of “Papel Picado”, the traditional Mexican folk art of decorative cut-out paper.

The musical headline features Shakira and Nigerian artist Burna Boy performing the track “Dai Dai”, which translates to “Let’s Go”. The event will also feature artists from the official FIFA World Cup album, including Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, and Maná. South African singer-songwriter Tyla is also confirmed to perform.

To facilitate the event, Mexico City authorities have declared 11 June a public holiday. Access to the stadium precinct will be strictly restricted to ticketed spectators, accredited media personnel, and authorised officials.

Furthermore, FIFA has confirmed that Shakira will return to perform during the World Cup final half-time show on 19 July, alongside pop icon Madonna and K-pop group BTS.

Toronto: 12 June

On the second day of the festivities, 12 June, the focus shifts north where host nation Canada will compete against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Prior to kick-off, Toronto will host its own distinct opening ceremony designed to showcase Canada’s multicultural and diverse national identity through music and choreography.

The artist lineup for the Canadian ceremony includes Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Elyanna, Jessie Reyez, Michael Bublé, Nora Fatehi, DJ Sanjay, Vegedream, and William Prince.

Los Angeles: 12 June

Concurrently on 12 June, the United States will launch its home campaign against Paraguay. The Los Angeles Stadium will host the third major opening celebration before the match commences.

The American ceremony features a contemporary pop and hip-hop lineup, including Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, Lisa, Rema, and a second appearance by Tyla.
