A police constable in Tongi, Gazipur, was critically injured during a street robbery on Tuesday night, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the area. The incident occurred around 11:00 pm near Nipun Garments, adjacent to Hossain Market, on the footpath of the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway.
The injured officer has been identified as Constable Mohammad Sahmul Haque Shanto, 23, a 2020 batch member currently serving in the Public Order Management (POM) unit under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Originally from Tarakandi, Muktagacha, Mymensingh, Constable Shanto was in Tongi for personal reasons at the time of the attack.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, Constable Shanto was walking along the footpath when a group of two to three robbers launched a sudden assault. During a struggle, one of the assailants stabbed him in the neck with a sharp weapon, causing him to collapse in a pool of blood.
Local residents rushed to the scene upon hearing his cries. The attackers fled, but one of them, identified as Roni, 26, was caught by locals and subjected to a brief citizen’s arrest before being handed over to police.
Constable Shanto was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with serious injuries. After receiving emergency treatment, he was admitted to Ward 4 for intensive monitoring. Medical staff reported that the stab wound to his neck was severe, and he remains under close observation.
The Tongi West Police quickly secured the area and took control of the situation. The arrested suspect, Roni, received preliminary medical attention before being placed in police custody for further investigation.
Tongi West Police Officer-in-Charge Shahin Khan confirmed that the primary suspect had been identified and detained. Police operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining assailants.
