In Louhajang Upazila of Munshiganj District, two young men were killed by local residents after being accused of theft. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, around 2 a.m., in the Satgharia area of the upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Md. Sagor (32) and Sanarul (34), both residents of Goalimandra Bedepalli village in Louhajang. According to local sources, the men were allegedly involved in repeated thefts across the upazila, including stealing livestock such as cows and goats, as well as electrical wires and other materials from government and private establishments.
Eyewitnesses reported that Sagor and Sanarul were caught attempting to steal electrical cables from Satgharia Community Clinic. A local poultry farmer initially detained them as suspects, after which other residents joined in. The stolen items were recovered from the duo, and angered locals began assaulting them. They were tied to a tree and beaten repeatedly from night until morning.
Police arrived at the scene at approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday and rescued the two in critical condition, subsequently taking them to Louhajang Upazila Health Complex. According to Fahmida Laskar, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, a van driver had transported the men to the hospital by 10:30 a.m., but they were already deceased upon arrival. She confirmed that the bodies bore visible marks of assault.
A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “The residents of Louhajang and Shreenagar were fed up with their repeated thefts. Although the incident was reported to the national emergency number 999 during the night, the police did not respond immediately. By the time they were rescued in the morning, the victims’ condition was critical, and they died while being transported.”
Louhajang police officer-in-charge Monirul Islam clarified that the official report was received at 9 a.m., not at night. “The two were known locally as professional thieves, but there were no formal theft cases filed against them at Louhajang Police Station,” he said, adding that the authorities are investigating the incident.
The following table summarises the key details of the case:
