Custodial Sentences for Heroin Possession in Kaliganj Raid

A targeted law enforcement operation in the Kaliganj Upazila of Gazipur has resulted in the conviction of two local men for the possession and consumption of illicit narcotics. The mobile court, conducted on Saturday, 7 March 2026, formed part of a broader regional effort to tackle substance abuse and ensure regulatory compliance at essential service stations.

The Narcotics Convictions

The operation took place in the Munsurpur village area, where authorities apprehended two individuals found in possession of heroin. The convicts have been identified as Al-Amin Mia (24), son of Bachchu Mia, and Ahijul Shikdar (45), son of Sahid Shikdar. Both men are residents of the village where the arrests occurred.

According to Mahbubul Islam, the Bench Assistant for the mobile court, the presiding officer was the Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Kaliganj, Zakia Sarwar Lima. During the raid, law enforcement officers discovered four small packets (locally known as “puria”) of heroin.

Following a summary trial under the Narcotics Control Act, the magistrate sentenced each individual to one month of simple imprisonment. Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Alim of Kaliganj Police Station served as the prosecutor during the proceedings, ensuring that the legal framework for the arrests was rigorously upheld.

Wider Enforcement and Regulatory Checks

Beyond the immediate arrests for drug offences, the administrative team extended their operations to include the inspection of several fuel stations in the vicinity. This secondary phase of the mission was designed to monitor the operational standards and supply management of petrol pumps within the Upazila.

Context of the Crackdown

The dual-purpose raid reflects a growing trend in regional administration where mobile courts address multiple civic issues simultaneously. By combining narcotics enforcement with the monitoring of fuel stations—particularly significant given the national context of fuel rationing—the local government aims to reinforce the rule of law across different sectors of society.

Local residents have noted that such operations are vital for maintaining public order, as the link between petty crime and narcotics consumption often disrupts the tranquility of rural townships. The authorities have signalled that further unannounced inspections will be conducted in the coming weeks to deter the sale of illicit substances.
