Give Captain Time to Build Team

Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz has urged patience in evaluating leadership, saying that any captain needs sufficient time to build a cohesive and competitive side. His remarks came ahead of Bangladesh’s three-match One Day International series against Pakistan national cricket team, which begins at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium tomorrow at 2:15 pm local time.

Although the press conference was officially arranged to preview the upcoming series, much of the discussion centred on Bangladesh’s broader ambitions in ODI cricket and Miraz’s role as captain. Bangladesh are embarking on a fresh ODI campaign this year, with a demanding schedule that could shape their prospects of qualifying directly for the next global tournament organised by the International Cricket Council.

Across home and away fixtures, Bangladesh are expected to play around 22 ODIs this year. These matches will play a significant role in determining their position in the ICC rankings, where finishing among the top nine teams ensures automatic qualification for the forthcoming ICC Cricket World Cup. For Bangladesh, maintaining or improving their ranking is therefore a major priority.

During the media interaction in Mirpur, Miraz was repeatedly asked about his captaincy philosophy, personal performance, and even the long-term future of his leadership. However, the all-rounder chose to avoid speculation about events beyond his current tenure, which runs until June.

Reflecting on leadership, Miraz emphasised that captains require time and stability to shape a team effectively.

According to him, regardless of who holds the captaincy, building a successful side demands patience from selectors and administrators. “In my view, whoever is given the captaincy should be allowed enough time to build the team properly,” Miraz said. “The cricket board will obviously make decisions about the future. My responsibility is to fulfil the role for as long as I have been entrusted with it and try to take the team to a better position.”

So far, Miraz’s record as an ODI captain has been modest. Since taking charge, he has led Bangladesh in 13 matches, winning only three. Two of those victories came during the most recent series against the West Indies cricket team, a result that Miraz believes can serve as motivation for future improvement.

Miraz believes the upcoming series against Pakistan could be crucial in shaping Bangladesh’s momentum in ODI cricket. For him, the significance of the matches extends far beyond personal achievements.

“This series is extremely important,” he explained. “Not for me individually, but for the team and for Bangladesh. We have the World Cup ahead of us, and qualifying directly is very important. Whoever the captain may be, Bangladesh must always come first.”

The previous year was dominated by Twenty20 commitments for Bangladesh, leaving relatively fewer opportunities to develop consistency in the ODI format. Their results reflected that disruption. Bangladesh lost an ODI series in Sri Lanka against the Sri Lanka national cricket team and were subsequently whitewashed by the Afghanistan national cricket team during a series held in the United Arab Emirates.

Nevertheless, Miraz believes the team now has an opportunity to begin a new chapter. He expressed confidence in the talent available within the squad and pledged to support every player as captain.

“A team can only be built when every player contributes,” he said. “As captain, I must stand beside my teammates. We have many promising players in this team, and if they perform consistently, it will benefit Bangladesh greatly.”

As Bangladesh prepare to face Pakistan in the opening ODI, the series may not only test the players’ form but also shape the direction of Miraz’s leadership and the team’s quest to secure a place at cricket’s most prestigious global tournament.
