A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Barishal has been expelled from his party post after being arrested with a quantity of yaba tablets and a substantial amount of cash during a raid by the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC). The decision was taken following allegations of involvement in drug-related activities and conduct deemed contrary to the party’s discipline and principles, according to local BNP officials.
The expelled leader, Md Enamul Howlader, previously served as the president of Ward No. 5 BNP in Rahmatpur Union under Babuganj upazila of Barishal district. He was apprehended during an operation conducted by narcotics officials at his residence in Khudrakathi village.
According to a statement issued on Thursday (12 March), Rahmatpur Union BNP formally removed Enamul Howlader from his organisational position. The notice was jointly signed by the union BNP president A. Karim Hang and general secretary Rajon Sikdar. The information was also confirmed in a notice signed by the union unit’s office secretary, Md Nizam Howlader.
Party leaders stated that the expulsion followed “clear allegations of involvement in narcotics-related activities” and behaviour inconsistent with the party’s ideals and organisational discipline. The notice further instructed party activists at all levels to refrain from maintaining any organisational contact with the expelled individual or involving him in any party-related activities.
The arrest itself took place earlier on Wednesday at around 1:30 p.m., when a team from the Barishal district office of the Department of Narcotics Control conducted a raid at Enamul Howlader’s two-storey residence in Khudrakathi village. The operation was carried out with the assistance of the Airport Police Station under the Barishal Metropolitan Police.
During the raid, officials recovered 326 yaba tablets and a significant amount of cash totalling 659,000 Bangladeshi taka from the premises. Enamul Howlader was subsequently taken into custody on the spot.
Investigators believe that he had been operating a small-scale yaba distribution network from his home for an extended period. Sources within the DNC alleged that customers frequently visited the second floor of his residence to purchase the illicit tablets. Local accounts also suggest that members of his family had attempted on several occasions to dissuade him from continuing the illegal activity, though these efforts reportedly proved unsuccessful.
Officials from the Department of Narcotics Control stated that the operation followed intelligence gathering and surveillance. To confirm the allegations, officers reportedly approached the suspect in disguise as potential buyers. After verifying the illegal transaction, they launched the raid and arrested him.
Inspector Howlader Md Sirajul Islam of the Barishal district office of the DNC confirmed the details of the operation. He stated that narcotics officers recovered both yaba tablets and a large amount of cash from the suspect’s room and that legal proceedings were being initiated under the relevant narcotics control laws.
A summary of the items seized during the operation is presented below:
| Seized Item | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Yaba tablets | 326 pieces |
| Cash recovered | 659,000 BDT |
| Location of raid | Khudrakathi village, Rahmatpur Union |

The incident has generated considerable discussion in local political circles, with observers noting the reputational damage such allegations can cause to political organisations. Local BNP leaders emphasised that the party maintains a zero-tolerance stance towards criminal activities and will take strict organisational action whenever members are found to be involved in illegal conduct.
Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and further legal action against the accused will proceed in accordance with the law.
