Nuclear Fears Surround Iran Claims

A senior representative at the United Nations-linked Patriotic Vision Organisation (PVO), Mohammad Safa, has suspended his diplomatic duties after more than a decade, issuing a striking public statement that has stirred concern and controversy in international circles. In a resignation notice posted on social media platform X, Safa alleged that the United Nations is preparing for a scenario involving the potential use of nuclear weapons against Iran.

In his statement, Safa suggested that the global public has yet to grasp the gravity of the situation. He claimed that internal preparations are being made for what he described as a catastrophic possibility, warning that such a development could have devastating humanitarian and environmental consequences. Referring specifically to Tehran—a densely populated metropolis of nearly ten million people—he underscored the immense scale of potential loss should any nuclear incident occur there.

Safa further stated that he chose to sacrifice his diplomatic career to bring attention to the issue, asserting that he could not remain complicit in, or silent about, what he characterised as a looming “crime against humanity”. He invoked the concept of a “nuclear winter”, a theoretical global climatic disruption caused by widespread nuclear explosions, to highlight the long-term risks not only for Iran but for the entire world.

In addition to his claims about nuclear preparedness, Safa accused senior UN officials of suppressing dissenting voices within the organisation. He alleged the existence of a “powerful lobby” influencing decision-making processes, particularly in relation to ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as tensions involving Iran. According to him, there has been reluctance at the highest levels to label certain actions as genocide, war crimes, or violations of international law.

Safa also claimed that since October 2023, he has faced threats to his life and the safety of his family as a result of attempting to voice dissenting views. He criticised what he described as a “manufactured narrative” regarding Iran’s nuclear threat, alleging that social media and sections of the international press are being used to mislead public opinion. In a direct appeal, he urged ordinary citizens worldwide to mobilise, arguing that public pressure is the only effective means to prevent escalation.

It is worth noting that Safa has served as Executive Director of PVO since 2013 and as a permanent representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2016, representing an organisation with consultative status.

Interestingly, similar concerns have been echoed by Dr Hanan Balkhy, Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean at the World Health Organization (WHO). In a recent interview, she warned that a nuclear event represents the “worst-case scenario” for the region. According to her, even the highest levels of preparedness would be insufficient to fully mitigate the consequences, which could persist for decades on both regional and global scales.
