A tragic case of accidental poisoning has claimed the life of a 60-year-old housewife in Faridpur, highlighting the dangers of improper storage of hazardous substances in domestic settings. The victim, Fatema Begum, died on Thursday (2 April) at approximately 9:30 a.m., a day after mistakenly consuming a herbicide she believed to be her prescribed medication.
Fatema Begum was a resident of Chardurgapur village in the Hajidangi area under Ishangopalpur Union of Faridpur Sadar Upazila. According to family members and police sources, the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. on on wednesday (1 April) inside her home. She had reportedly been suffering from complications related to a previous stroke and was accustomed to taking regular medication.
On the day of the incident, she inadvertently consumed a bottle of grass-killing poison, mistaking it for her medicine. Within a short period, she began to exhibit severe symptoms of poisoning. Realising the gravity of the situation, her family members rushed her to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where she was admitted to the medicine ward for emergency treatment.
Despite prompt medical attention and the efforts of attending physicians, her condition deteriorated overnight. She succumbed to the effects of the toxic substance the following morning.
Local police from Kotwali Police Station were informed of the incident and visited the hospital. Officers completed an inquest report on the body, treating the case as an accidental death pending further legal procedures. Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahidul Islam confirmed that necessary legal steps were underway to document and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The victim’s husband, Md. Alef Sheikh, stated that his wife had long struggled with post-stroke health complications, which required her to take medication regularly. He believes that her physical condition and possible confusion contributed to the fatal mistake. “She thought it was her medicine,” he said, adding that the poison had been stored the home, leading to the tragic mix-up.
Public health experts note that such incidents are not uncommon in rural and semi-urban areas, where pesticides and household chemicals are often stored in unlabelled or easily accessible containers. The lack of clear labelling, combined with limited awareness, increases the risk of accidental ingestion—particularly among elderly individuals or those with underlying health conditions.
Authorities and healthcare professionals have reiterated the importance of safe storage practices. Toxic substances should be kept in clearly marked containers, stored separately from medicines, and placed out of reach of vulnerable individuals. Community awareness campaigns, they suggest, could play a crucial role in preventing similar tragedies in the future.
