Policeman Loses Legs in Train Mishap

A 30-year-old police officer, Emran Mia, has been rushed to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment after a devastating accident in which he lost both legs while attempting to disembark from a moving train in Naogaon’s Atrai Upazila. The incident, which underscores the grave dangers of unsafe train travel practices, occurred on Monday morning at Atrai Railway Station.

According to hospital sources, Emran Mia was travelling on the Simanta Express when he attempted to alight before the train had come to a complete halt. In doing so, he lost his balance and fell beneath the carriage, where he was run over by the train wheels. The impact resulted in catastrophic injuries: his left leg was severed below the knee, while his right leg remained partially attached but critically damaged.

Immediately after the accident, local residents and bystanders rushed to his aid and transported him to the Atrai Upazila Health Complex. Given the severity of his injuries, he was quickly referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for emergency care. The doctors on duty there considered his condition to be extremely critical and advised him to be transferred to the capital, Dhaka, for better treatment.

Shankar Kumar Biswas, spokesperson and head of the emergency department at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, confirmed that the patient’s family requested a transfer to Dhaka. Following medical stabilisation, he was discharged and sent to the Preparations were made to take him to the capital’s police hospital.

Emran Mia’s family members acted swiftly to preserve the severed limb in the hope of possible reattachment. His father-in-law Abdul Khalek said the severed leg was stored in an ice-filled carton and sent to Dhaka with the patient in an ambulance. Throughout the journey, medical personnel ensured continuous blood transfusion and intravenous fluid support to stabilise his condition.

Originally from Pirojpur, Emran Mia is currently posted in Bagerhat as a serving police officer. He had travelled to his in-laws’ residence in Taratia village of Atrai to help resolve an ongoing land dispute. The unfortunate incident occurred while he was returning from the visit.

Family sources reveal that Emran is the youngest among five siblings—four brothers and one sister—and the son of a retired madrasa teacher. Married approximately nine years ago, he is the father of two young children. His father-in-law, who has no sons of his own, described Emran as a dependable figure who often assisted in family matters.
