Political unrest gripped the Sirajganj-3 constituency on Saturday afternoon following an attack on sitting Member of Parliament Aynul Haq in the Dhangara area of Rayganj. The lawmaker from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) escaped without physical injury, though his personal vehicle suffered noticeable damage after being pelted with bricks and heavy stones.
The incident occurred during the late afternoon of 15 August while Haq was visiting Dhangara. Eyewitnesses described a sudden outbreak of chaos as a group of individuals began hurling projectiles directly at the MP. Seeking safety, Haq quickly entered his car to leave the area, but assailants continued to throw stones at the vehicle as it sped away, damaging its exterior.
Following the assault, Haq released a video statement questioning the state of security in the region. The MP expressed grave concern over public safety, observing that even as a member of the ruling party, his personal safety felt compromised. He went on to assert that if a lawmaker lacks adequate protection, the general public’s life and property remain similarly at risk. In his message, Haq held activists from the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir responsible for the ambush and called on law enforcement to apprehend the culprits immediately.
The assault triggered prompt protest rallies by local BNP activists across the constituency—which encompasses Rayganj, Tarash, and parts of Solonga—demanding justice and the swift arrest of those involved.
Addressing the incident, Saiful Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Rayganj Circle, confirmed that a clash had erupted between two rival factions in Dhangara. He noted that police units moved rapidly to restore order and maintain a visible presence to prevent further escalation. The police official added that no formal written complaint had been lodged by Saturday evening, assuring that a thorough investigation would follow once an official case is filed.
