Legal Controversy Surrounds Nora Fatehi Song

Nora Fatehi, the renowned performer, has found herself at the centre of a storm following the release of a song from the film Kedi: The Devil. The track, titled Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke, features Fatehi alongside popular Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. Since its release, the song has sparked widespread criticism and legal scrutiny.

The controversy stems from the song’s suggestive lyrics and provocative visuals, which many critics argue are inappropriate and demeaning. The backlash was so intense that the producers and distributors of the film were compelled to remove the Hindi version of the song from YouTube. However, the scrutiny did not end there. The National Commission for Women (NCW) in India has launched formal legal action against the song, asserting that artistic freedom cannot be used as a justification for undermining the dignity of women.

According to multiple Indian media outlets, the NCW emphasised during a Monday hearing that “creativity must never come at the cost of a woman’s honour.” Despite the removal of the song from digital platforms, the Commission insists that its content remains excessively suggestive and unsuitable for public viewing. In response, the NCW has initiated proceedings against the film’s director, lyricist, producers, and performers.

At the hearing, director Prem, lyricist Rakib Alam, and a representative of the production company were present, while Nora Fatehi did not attend in person. Although her legal counsel appeared on her behalf, the Commission did not accept this and set a final deadline of 27 April for Fatehi to appear in person. The NCW Chairperson sternly remarked, “Under no circumstances can a woman’s dignity be compromised in the name of creativity.”

The filmmakers defended themselves by claiming they did not fully understand the meaning of the lyrics. This defence was rejected by the Commission, and the producers ultimately issued a written apology. They have also committed to undertaking initiatives promoting women’s empowerment over the next three months and submitting progress reports to the NCW.

The song’s release had already triggered a wave of criticism on social media, with audiences and film industry figures alike condemning its explicit content. Following this, the Delhi Police Cyber Cell received complaints, and an appeal was made to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to ban the song.
