A tourist was severely assaulted at the Sugandha Point of Cox’s Bazar sea beach on Saturday afternoon (18 April), leaving him seriously injured, according to police reports.
The victim, Md Enam (28), is the son of Akshar Ahmed from Sapachhari village in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram. The incident occurred on the sandy beach area, reportedly around midday.
Tourist Police Inspector Md Jahangir, citing eyewitness accounts, stated that a group of tourists who had arrived for a picnic rented three tubes at approximately 12:30 pm. Before entering the sea for bathing, they left their shoes with the tube operators for safekeeping. After returning from the sea, they found that one pair of the three pairs of shoes was missing.
A dispute subsequently arose between the tourists and the tube operators over the missing footwear. The disagreement escalated into a heated altercation. At one point, several individuals, including horse handlers, photographers, and tube operators, allegedly formed a group and attacked the tourists.
During the incident, Md Enam was forced to the ground on the beach and was severely beaten, resulting in serious injuries. The confrontation took place in a crowded tourist area of the beach.
Upon receiving information, personnel from the district administration’s beach workers and Tourist Police promptly arrived at the scene. They rescued the injured tourist and arranged for his medical treatment.
The Tourist Police confirmed that Md Enam sustained serious injuries as a result of the assault. Two individuals identified as Md Rubel (18) and Md Shakil (18), both horse handlers, were detained in connection with the incident. They were subsequently handed over to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station.
Authorities also stated that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the attack.
