Chelsea’s recent run of form in the Premier League has reached a historically significant low, with the club suffering five consecutive league defeats without scoring a single goal. The sequence has placed the London side in a period of decline not seen for over a century.
Their latest defeat came against Brighton & Hove Albion, who secured a 3–0 victory. This result marked Chelsea’s fifth straight league loss, during which they failed to register any goals. It is the first time since 1912 that the club has lost five consecutive league matches without scoring, effectively returning them to a 114-year statistical low. When considering only consecutive league defeats regardless of scoring, this is also Chelsea’s first such run since 1993.
The current sequence began on 14 March with a 1–0 defeat away to Newcastle United. This was followed by a 3–0 loss to Everton. Chelsea then suffered back-to-back defeats at Stamford Bridge, losing 3–0 to Manchester City and 1–0 to Manchester United. The run was completed with the 3–0 loss to Brighton.
Chelsea’s last five Premier League matches
| Match No. | Opponent | Venue | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Newcastle United | Away | 0–1 |
| 2 | Everton | Away | 0–3 |
| 3 | Manchester City | Home | 0–3 |
| 4 | Manchester United | Home | 0–1 |
| 5 | Brighton & Hove Albion | Away | 0–3 |
Across all competitions, Chelsea have lost seven of their last eight matches, with their only victory coming in the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale, a club from England’s third tier.
In the Premier League context, Chelsea’s recent form is among the poorest in the division. Over the last nine league matches, only Tottenham Hotspur have collected fewer points (2), while Chelsea have managed just five.
Defensive statistics further underline the team’s difficulties. Chelsea have conceded 11 goals from corners this season, equalling their highest recorded total in a single Premier League campaign (also 11 in 1994–95). Only West Ham United have conceded more goals from corners this season, with 15.
Following the defeat to Brighton, head coach Liam Rosenior described the performance as “unacceptable” and “not supportable in any way”. He also stated that this was the first time he had faced visible supporter discontent, including booing.
Rosenior’s post-match comments included the following assessment: “From every aspect of the game, this performance was unacceptable. Our mentality was not acceptable. I have consistently defended the players.”
He added: “Today’s performance is not supportable in any way. The manner in which we conceded goals, the number of duels we lost, and the lack of intensity in the team mean that major changes are required. The players must look at themselves and assess what they are contributing on the pitch. Overall, the performance is unacceptable.”
At the end of 34 league matches, Chelsea remain seventh with 48 points. However, with several teams below them having played fewer matches, their position in the table remains under threat as the season progresses.
