Three Family Members Killed by Falling Tree in Jamalpur

Three members of a family—a mother and her two daughters—died after a tree fell on their home during a storm in Jamalpur’s Melandah Upazila. The incident occurred around 3:30 am on Monday in the Daghi area under Noayanagar Union.

The information was confirmed on Monday morning by Melandah Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jinnatul Ara.

According to local residents and Fire Service officials, the victims were asleep inside their house when the incident took place. A large mahogany tree located beside the dwelling was uprooted and collapsed onto the structure amid strong winds associated with a seasonal Boishakh storm. The impact of the falling tree caused the roof and walls of the house to collapse, trapping the occupants beneath the debris.

The deceased were identified as Khuki Begum (65), widow of the late Goni Mandal, and her two daughters, Farida Akhter (40) and Fote Akhter (37), all residents of Daghi village in Noayanagar Union.

Locals reported that the accident occurred during the night, but the bodies were recovered in the morning after residents noticed the damage and informed authorities. Fire Service personnel and police later arrived at the scene, assisted in removing the tree, and recovered the bodies from the wreckage.

Storms during the Bengali month of Boishakh are often accompanied by sudden gusts of wind, which can lead to damage to homes and trees, particularly in rural areas where large trees are situated close to residential structures. In this case, the proximity of a mature mahogany tree to the house resulted in a fatal collapse when it was uprooted during the storm.

Police and Fire Service teams completed the recovery operation at the site following the removal of the fallen tree. Further administrative details regarding the incident were not immediately disclosed.
