Oil Prices Rise Amid Talks Delay

Oil prices increased in Asian trading on Monday morning following the postponement of a second round of negotiations between the United States and Iran, signalling renewed uncertainty in global energy markets.

Benchmark Brent crude rose by 2.2 per cent to reach 107.70 US dollars per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, the primary US benchmark, climbed 2.1 per cent to 96.40 US dollars per barrel. The developments were reported by the BBC.

The price surge followed an announcement made on Saturday by Donald Trump, who stated that Washington had cancelled plans to send a delegation to Pakistan for discussions with Iran. The decision appears to have had an immediate impact on market sentiment.

Since the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, pressure on global energy supplies has intensified. In response to air strikes conducted by the United States and Israel, Iran threatened to target shipping routes, leading to severe disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway is responsible for transporting প্রায় one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, making it a critical chokepoint in global trade.

On Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that “important discussions” were ongoing with neighbouring Oman, focusing on bilateral issues and regional stability. In a statement shared via social media, he emphasised that ensuring safe maritime navigation remains a top priority, not only for Iran but also for neighbouring countries and the wider international community.

Meanwhile, Trump, posting on the social media platform Truth Social, criticised the delay, describing it as a waste of time and citing excessive workload. He also alleged that there was “intense internal conflict and confusion” within Iran’s leadership. According to his remarks, “They do not even know who is in charge. All the cards are in our hands; they have none. If they want to talk, they only need to call.”

Last week, the United States urged Tehran to present a “coordinated proposal” and announced an extension of the ceasefire period. However, since that announcement, Brent crude prices have already increased by more than 10 per cent, having previously fallen below 90 US dollars per barrel.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, 19 commercial vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. Data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development indicate that, before the escalation of conflict in late February, an average of 129 vessels passed through the route daily.

Economic Implications of Rising Oil Prices

An increase in global oil prices typically exerts broad economic pressure, particularly on import-dependent developing countries. Higher fuel costs often lead to increased transport fares and rising prices of essential goods. Agricultural production costs, especially irrigation expenses, also tend to rise, placing additional strain on farmers.

For small businesses, elevated operating costs can reduce profitability and threaten sustainability. As household incomes often remain unchanged, higher expenditures gradually erode purchasing power, making daily life more challenging.

At the macroeconomic level, increased import bills for fuel can deplete foreign currency reserves and contribute to currency depreciation. Rising production and transportation costs tend to accelerate inflation, while governments may face mounting fiscal pressure due to increased subsidy requirements. These factors can discourage investment, slow economic growth, and make living conditions more expensive for the general population.
