25kg Pangas Fetches Tk 70,000 in Auction

A 25-kilogram Pangas fish caught from the Padma River in Rajbari district has been sold at a wholesale fish market for Tk 70,000 following an open auction.

The fish was caught in the early hours of Tuesday (28 April) from the Padma River in the Daulatdia area under Goalanda Upazila. It was netted by local fisherman Ershad Mondal, who had gone fishing overnight at the confluence of the Padma and Jamuna rivers along with his fellow fishermen.

Ershad Mondal stated that they cast their nets during the night and returned before dawn to collect them. Upon lifting the net, they discovered a large Pangas fish weighing approximately 25 kilograms. Given its size and market demand, the fish was immediately transported to a fish trading centre (arat) in Daulatdia for sale.

At the market, the fish was placed for public auction among traders. After competitive bidding, it was sold at a rate of Tk 2,800 per kilogram, bringing the total price to Tk 70,000.

The fish was purchased by ferry ghat-based fish trader Md. Chandu Molla. He confirmed that he bought the fish through the open bidding process and is currently arranging for its resale in different markets.

According to the district fisheries officer, Md. Mahbub Ul Haque, the availability of large-sized fish in the Padma River is linked to improved fish growth conditions. He noted that the enforcement of government regulations, including fishing restrictions and conservation measures during designated periods, has contributed to a healthier aquatic environment, allowing fish to grow to larger sizes.
