A deeply disturbing incident of domestic and neighbour-related violence in Faridpur Sadar upazila has left three people dead and another seriously injured after a young man attacked them with a hoe-like agricultural tool. The attack, which occurred in Gadadhardangi village under Aliabad Union, has shocked the local community and prompted a swift police investigation.
According to police and local sources, the incident took place on Monday night at around 9:00 pm when 28-year-old Akash Molla suddenly launched a violent assault using a sharp agricultural hoe. He reportedly entered several homes and surrounding areas, striking people indiscriminately. The brutal attack resulted in three deaths at the scene and left one person critically injured.
The deceased have been identified as Akash Molla’s paternal aunt Rahila Begum (50), his grandmother Amena Begum (75), and a neighbour, Kabul (45). The injured victim, Riaz Molla (45), was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under treatment.
Panic spread rapidly through the village following the attack, with residents alerting law enforcement immediately. Police arrived shortly afterwards, recovered the bodies, and completed initial inquest procedures at the scene.
On Tuesday morning, a joint operation conducted by the Rapid Action Battalion and police led to the arrest of the accused from a banana plantation near the village. Officers also recovered a blood-stained hoe believed to have been used in the killings. Authorities reported that the suspect appeared to be in an incoherent and unstable mental state at the time of arrest.
Locals stated that Akash Molla had previously worked at a medical-related institution but lost his job amid concerns over his mental condition. Since then, he was described as increasingly isolated and erratic, sometimes staying at home for extended periods and at other times leaving the area without notice. Despite efforts by family members to support and supervise him, his behaviour reportedly remained unpredictable.
Police have confirmed that the accused has been sent to court following preliminary interrogation. Authorities have also initiated procedures for a psychiatric evaluation. Investigators are currently examining the motive behind the killings, including whether there was any prior planning or underlying family disputes contributing to the violence.
Officials in Faridpur stated that forensic evidence and other materials have been collected from the scene, and the investigation is progressing rapidly to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
