Ostad Sudhin Das was a distinguished figure in the musical landscape of the Indian subcontinent, recognised as a dedicated researcher, practitioner, and organiser of music. His work is particularly noted for its contribution to the preservation, standardisation, and dissemination of Bengali music, especially Nazrul Sangeet and Lalon songs.
He was born on 30 April 1930 in Comilla, within a culturally active environment. His father was Nishikanta Das and his mother Hemaprabha Devi. His initial musical education began under the guidance of his elder brother, Suren Das. This early training laid the foundation for his later advancement into rigorous study and practice of classical music traditions.
During his academic period at Comilla Victoria College in 1947, Sudhin Das first received public recognition through a radio audition. From 1965 onwards, he became associated with television broadcasting, further expanding his engagement with musical performance and presentation.
Throughout his career, Sudhin Das worked across multiple dimensions of music, including performance, composition, direction, and research. His most significant contribution lies in his efforts to establish an authentic and structured form of Nazrul Sangeet, based on the compositions of Kazi Nazrul Islam. Through sustained work, he played a central role in organising and systematising this genre within Bangladesh.
He was also a pioneering figure in the documentation of musical notation. The 21-volume collection of notations of Nazrul songs, edited by him and published by the Nazrul Institute and Nazrul Academy, is regarded as a major reference work in Bengali music studies. In addition, he initiated the publication of the first systematic notated collection of Lalon songs, contributing to the formal documentation of that tradition.
His institutional roles were extensive. He served as the founding principal of the then East Pakistan Cultural Academy (Dhanmondi). He also worked as an examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations at the University of Dhaka, chaired grading boards for radio and television, and presided over the Bangla Notation Authentication Council.
