Ceasefire Breaches Escalate Lebanon Strikes

Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have continued despite an existing ceasefire arrangement, with the latest attacks killing at least ten people in a single day, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health. This brings the total number of fatalities from ceasefire violations over the past 24 hours to 41.

Citing figures released on Saturday (2 May), the ministry confirmed that the renewed wave of strikes has intensified the human toll across several locations in southern Lebanon. The state-run National News Agency (NNA) provided further details of the incidents, reporting multiple separate strikes across the Nabatieh district and surrounding areas.

According to the NNA, three people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the town of Shoukin in the Nabatieh district. In a separate incident earlier the same day, two individuals were killed when a vehicle was struck in the village of Kfar Dajjal. Another strike on a residential house in the village of Louaizeh resulted in three additional deaths. A further attack in Shoukin village claimed two more lives, bringing the combined total of these four incidents to ten fatalities.

Beyond these confirmed deaths, additional Israeli air operations were reported in the region. Strikes were carried out near the Al-Quds roundabout in the city of Nabatieh, while another air raid targeted the town of Sidiqine in the Tyre district. However, no casualty figures were provided for these specific locations in the available reports.

The Ministry of Public Health stated that the latest fatalities are part of a broader pattern of continuing violence despite a ceasefire agreement that came into effect on 17 April, mediated with the involvement of the United States. According to the ministry, the cumulative death toll since 2 March this year has now reached 2,659 people, while 8,183 individuals have been reported injured.

Israeli authorities have maintained that their operations are directed against members of Hezbollah, the armed group based in Lebanon. However, Lebanese official sources and reports indicate that a significant proportion of those killed in recent strikes have been civilians.

The escalation underscores continued instability in southern Lebanon, where repeated violations of the ceasefire have been reported by local authorities. Despite diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities, the frequency of airstrikes across populated areas has sustained a high level of casualties and damage, according to official Lebanese sources.
