An elderly worshipper was killed inside a mosque during the early morning prayer in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar district, Bangladesh, on Sunday (3 May). The deceased has been identified as Hafiz Uddin, aged 78, a resident of West Loiarkul village under Bhunbir Union.
According to police and local accounts, the incident took place at West Loiarkul Jame Mosque during the Fajr (dawn) prayer. As there was no permanent imam assigned to the mosque, Hafiz Uddin was leading the congregation at the time of the incident.
Witnesses stated that while the prayer was in progress and the worshippers were in the act of performing the prayer, Hafiz Uddin was in the prostration position when the attack occurred. At that moment, a man identified as Jasim Mia, aged 30, entered the mosque and launched an unprovoked assault on him inside the prayer hall.
The sudden attack caused serious injuries to Hafiz Uddin. Members of the congregation and local residents immediately intervened and attempted to provide assistance. He was quickly taken from the mosque and arrangements were made to transport him to a hospital for urgent medical care.
However, despite these efforts, Hafiz Uddin succumbed to his injuries while being taken for treatment and was declared dead before reaching the medical facility.
Following the incident, officers from Sreemangal Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after being informed. Police detained the suspect, Jasim Mia, from the same locality. Authorities have confirmed that both the victim and the accused are residents of the West Loiarkul area.
Law enforcement officials have stated that the motive behind the killing has not yet been determined. The investigation is ongoing, and police are currently examining all available information related to the circumstances of the incident.
