A grandmother and her granddaughter were killed after being run over by a bus on the Dhaka–Barishal highway in Uzirpur upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred at around 12:30 pm in front of the West Joyshree Kazibari area. According to police and local accounts, the victims were struck while attempting to cross the highway.
The deceased have been identified as Rokshana Yasmin (65), wife of the late Pannu Kazi of West Joyshree village, and Arfa (7), the daughter of her son Rubel Kazi.
The information was confirmed by Md. Mohsin Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Gournadi Highway Police Station.
According to the OC, a bus operated by Hanif Paribahan was travelling at high speed along the stretch of road when the incident took place. He stated that the bus hit the two pedestrians while they were crossing the highway and immediately fled the scene after the collision.
Locals informed authorities shortly after the incident, following which police arrived at the location. The bodies were recovered from the scene by the Gournadi Highway Police and subsequently sent to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
Police confirmed that efforts are underway to identify and locate the driver of the bus. However, no arrest had been made immediately following the incident. The bus involved in the accident is also being sought for seizure as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities stated that legal proceedings will follow in accordance with the investigation findings. Police operations to apprehend the driver and recover the vehicle remain in progress.
