Incident Overview and Methodology
On Tuesday, at approximately 11:42 AM, Mr Barman received a telephone call at his residence in South Bonosree. The caller introduced himself as an official from the victim’s bank. According to the General Diary (GD) filed at the local police station, the caller informed Mr Barman that his banking records required urgent updating and requested specific personal details to facilitate the process.
Trusting the caller’s professional demeanour and the stated necessity of the update, Mr Barman provided his personal information and date of birth. Shortly thereafter, the perpetrator successfully initiated two “Add Money” transactions from Mr Barman’s BRAC Bank account. A total sum of 124,997 BDT was transferred to two separate mobile numbers controlled by the fraudsters.
Post-Incident Discovery
The victim became aware of the unauthorised withdrawals almost immediately. However, upon attempting to call the number from which the initial contact was made, he found it had been switched off. A second contact number provided by the purported official was also unreachable. This pattern is consistent with “vishing” (voice phishing) tactics, where temporary SIM cards are discarded immediately after a successful transaction to evade tracking.

Context of Financial Fraud in Bangladesh
Digital financial crimes, particularly those involving bank impersonation, have seen a rise in urban centres like Dhaka. Such scams typically exploit the “Add Money” feature, which bridges traditional banking apps with mobile wallets.
Banking regulations in Bangladesh strictly prohibit bank employees from requesting sensitive information—such as dates of birth, PINs, or One-Time Passwords (OTPs)—over the telephone. Security experts consistently advise the public that any request for personal data via an unsolicited call should be treated as fraudulent. Most commercial banks, including BRAC Bank, maintain official helplines for customers to verify the legitimacy of such requests before disclosing any information.
