Front Tyre Burst Triggers Fatal Crash

A devastating road accident on the Dhaka–Rangpur Highway in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district has claimed the life of a woman and left at least 20 passengers injured after a bus lost control following a sudden tyre blowout and collided violently with a roadside metal signpost.

According to local sources and eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred late on Wednesday evening when a passenger bus travelling from Paglapir towards Pirganj reached the area near the Dumduma Rahman fuel pump in Mithapukur. In an instant, the front tyre of the vehicle reportedly exploded with a loud bang, causing the driver to lose control of the bus.

Within seconds, the vehicle veered off its course and slammed into a heavy iron pole supporting a roadside signboard. The impact was severe, crushing the front section of the bus and causing panic among passengers, many of whom were thrown forward or struck against seats and interior structures.

Local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the crash and assisted in rescuing the injured. Emergency response teams, including fire service personnel and law enforcement officers, later joined the rescue operation. The injured passengers were transported to Rangpur Medical College Hospital using ambulances and other available vehicles.

Medical officials confirmed that one woman, identified as Shamsun Nahar (35), wife of Khasru Mia from the village of Purba Bhanga in Shanerhat area of Pirganj upazila, was declared dead after being taken to hospital in critical condition. Doctors also reported that at least two of the injured passengers remain in serious condition.

The accident caused temporary disruption to traffic on the busy highway. Movement was restored after the damaged bus was removed from the road and emergency crews cleared the site.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Police officials from Mithapukur Police Station stated that the exact cause of the crash is being examined, including whether mechanical failure, speed, or maintenance negligence played a role, and that legal procedures are underway.

Residents in the area have expressed concern over what they describe as frequent highway accidents, citing poor vehicle maintenance, lack of regular fitness inspections, and reckless driving as major contributing factors. They have called for stricter enforcement of transport regulations and more rigorous monitoring of long-distance passenger vehicles to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
