The Government of Bangladesh has unveiled an ambitious economic roadmap aiming to transform the country into a trillion-dollar economy by 2034. The target is underpinned by a comprehensive set of strategic priorities to be incorporated into the upcoming fiscal year’s national budget, with a strong emphasis on macroeconomic stability, structural reform, and inclusive growth.
According to the proposed budget statement presented by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Bangladesh can evolve into a major economic power through consistent policy implementation and deep institutional reforms. He highlighted that demographic advantages, expanding workforce capacity, and increased democratic participation could further accelerate economic momentum over the coming decade.
For the next fiscal year, the government has set a target of reducing inflation to 7.5 per cent while raising gross domestic product (GDP) growth to 6.5 per cent. Policymakers expect that achieving these benchmarks will ease living costs, stabilise markets, and reinforce overall economic resilience.
Central to the strategy is a ten-point priority framework designed to reshape the economy into a productive, technology-driven, and environmentally sustainable system. These priorities collectively aim to support industrial expansion, diversify exports, and strengthen governance mechanisms.
The first priority focuses on inclusive development, ensuring equitable participation across all social and regional groups. The second emphasises quality education and healthcare to build a skilled and productive labour force. The third strengthens universal social protection systems, particularly for vulnerable populations across different stages of life.
The fourth priority promotes an investment-led and employment-oriented economy, with a focus on industrialisation, export diversification, and agricultural modernisation. The fifth seeks to improve the business environment by reducing bureaucratic hurdles and simplifying administrative processes. The sixth aims to restore confidence in the financial sector through enhanced transparency and stability in banking and capital markets.
Energy security forms the seventh priority, ensuring uninterrupted electricity and fuel supply to sustain industrial activity. The eighth focuses on expanding information and communication technology to support the transition towards a digital economy. The ninth prioritises environmental protection and water resource management, with a focus on climate resilience and sustainable use of natural assets. The tenth and final priority is efficient and accountable governance, designed to improve public administration and accelerate development project implementation.
