A devastating attack in Raipur Upazila of Lakshmipur has left five members of the same family dead, following a brutal assault that has shocked the local community and triggered widespread grief.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in a rented residence in the Dhannhata riverside area of Raipur municipal town, within Raipur Upazila in Lakshmipur District. According to witnesses, panic spread rapidly after cries for help were heard from the house, prompting nearby residents to rush to the scene, where they discovered multiple victims lying in pools of blood.
Police and eyewitness accounts indicate that a 28-year-old man, identified as Antar Majumdar, entered the residence unexpectedly and launched a violent attack on the family using a sharp-edged weapon. The assault resulted in the immediate deaths of Shahinur Begum, aged 40, and her 10-year-old daughter Sipa Akter.
Two other daughters, Shaima Akter (21) and Iqra Begum (17), were critically injured in the attack and rushed to hospital. Shaima Akter later died at a local health complex in Raipur, while Iqra Begum succumbed to her injuries while being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. With their deaths, the total fatalities rose to five members of the same family.
The attacker was reportedly intercepted by local residents as he attempted to flee the scene. He was then subjected to a mob assault, which left him seriously injured. Police later rescued him and transported him to hospital, where he also died while undergoing treatment.
The family had been living in the rented accommodation for several years. Neighbours said Shahinur Begum had been raising her children on her own after the death of her husband, taking on various forms of work to support their education and daily needs. Among the surviving daughters, one was studying at college, while the others were attending school and higher secondary level education.
Authorities have yet to confirm the motive behind the attack. Raipur police stated that investigations are ongoing to determine whether there was any prior connection between the attacker and the family or whether any personal dispute led to the violence. Officials have also suggested that the suspect may have been under the influence of drugs or suffering from mental instability, though this has not been verified.
Forensic teams have collected evidence from the scene, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations. The incident has left the area in a state of deep shock, with residents expressing grief and concern over the unprecedented brutality of the attack.
