Ex-Army Man Killed in Road Crash in Nilphamari

A former army personnel was killed in a road accident in Nilphamari district on Thursday, as a collision between a passenger bus and a motorcycle left multiple people injured along a busy highway undergoing repair works.

The deceased, identified as Russell Bosunia, 48, was a resident of the Chilahati area in Domar upazila and the son of Zakaria Bosunia. The incident occurred around 12 noon on the Nilphamari–Domar highway in the Nilahati Kalitala area.

According to local accounts, the accident took place while road maintenance work was underway on the highway. Large potholes and trenches created for repairs forced vehicles to manoeuvre carefully along a narrowed and uneven stretch of road. In such conditions, a passenger bus reportedly lost control while navigating the damaged surface and struck a motorcycle carrying Russell Bosunia and his family.

Russell died on the spot due to the severity of the impact. His wife and two children, who were also on the motorcycle, sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Their condition has not been officially confirmed.

Following the collision, the bus veered off the road and came to a halt on the roadside. Several passengers aboard the vehicle were also injured in the process, though the extent of their injuries remains unclear.

Eyewitnesses and local residents have raised concerns over the ongoing roadworks, claiming that insufficient safety measures have been put in place. They said that open trenches, uneven surfaces and a lack of proper warning signage have made the highway increasingly dangerous for commuters. According to them, accidents in the area have become frequent since the repair work began.

Police confirmed that the body of the deceased has been handed over to his family after necessary legal procedures. The motorcycle involved in the crash has been taken into custody, while the bus is also being recovered for further investigation.

Authorities have stated that appropriate legal action will follow as the circumstances of the accident are reviewed.
