Bangladesh have received a massive boost mid-way through the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup. Nigar Sultana Joty’s side has secured a top-four finish in the group stage, ensuring direct qualification for the 2028 Women’s T20 World Cup. The next edition of this prestigious global showpiece is scheduled to be held in Pakistan.
Under the updated qualification criteria established by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the top four teams from each of the two groups in the 2026 edition earn automatic berths for the subsequent tournament. The Bangladesh squad successfully navigated a highly competitive group to cement their position amongst the elite.
The complex mathematical equations of the group stages have now resolved, locking in eight teams for automatic qualification based on their performances. Joining Bangladesh from Group A are heavyweights Australia, India, and South Africa. Meanwhile, Group B has seen England, the West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka claim their direct tickets to the 2028 tournament.
The final day of the group stage was filled with high drama. Sri Lanka faced a must-win situation against a resilient Scotland side. Chamari Athapaththu’s team held their nerve during a tense final over to clinch a dramatic victory, becoming the final team from the groups to guarantee automatic qualification. Pakistan, despite their on-field results, were already guaranteed a spot in 2028 as the host nation, bringing the total number of confirmed teams to nine.
The tenth and final slot for the 2028 World Cup will be determined by the official ICC T20I team rankings. The cut-off date has been set for 6 July 2026, when the ICC will publish its updated rankings list. The highest-ranked team outside of the nine already qualified will automatically claim the final position. Current ranking trends strongly favour Ireland, making them the frontrunners to occupy that ultimate spot.
Concurrently, the ICC has finalised the qualification structure for the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy, which will debut in Sri Lanka in 2027. This tournament will feature six teams. Sri Lanka qualify automatically as hosts, whilst the remaining five spots will be allocated to the top five teams in the ICC T20I rankings as of the 6 July 2026 cut-off date. Currently, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, and South Africa hold those coveted top-five positions, setting the stage for a spectacular inaugural tournament.
