Eight children have died across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours after developing symptoms associated with measles, according to the latest update from the Directorate General of Health Services. During the same period, 798 children were reported with either confirmed measles or symptoms consistent with the disease.
The figures were released in an updated measles situation report issued by the health authorities on Saturday afternoon, 15 August.
According to the report, eight additional deaths were recorded among children showing measles-related symptoms over the latest 24-hour period. Since 15 March, the number of deaths among children with suspected measles or measles-like symptoms has reached 803 nationwide. A further 99 children have died after being diagnosed with measles.
Taken together, confirmed measles infections and suspected cases associated with measles-like symptoms have resulted in 902 child deaths since the outbreak began being monitored in mid-March.
The latest figures also show that 70 children were newly diagnosed with measles during the 24-hour period, while another 728 developed symptoms associated with the disease. A total of 700 children were admitted to hospitals during the period, while 549 patients were discharged after receiving treatment.
The cumulative figures indicate the scale of the health burden. Since 15 March, authorities have recorded 141,776 suspected measles cases across the country, while the number of confirmed measles cases has reached 17,800.
Hospital admissions have also remained high. A total of 123,494 patients have been admitted to hospitals since the beginning of the reporting period. Of these, 119,089 have subsequently recovered sufficiently to be discharged and return home.
The continuing rise in suspected cases and deaths highlights the pressure being placed on hospitals and health services, particularly where children require treatment for complications associated with measles. The disease can be particularly dangerous for young children, especially when they are vulnerable to complications such as pneumonia, severe dehydration and other infections.
The latest health directorate figures also show that the number of suspected cases is considerably higher than the number of laboratory-confirmed infections. This distinction is significant because suspected cases include patients presenting with symptoms compatible with measles, while confirmed cases are those formally identified as measles infections.
Health facilities therefore continue to play a central role in identifying cases, providing treatment and monitoring patients for complications. The number of children being admitted and discharged each day also reflects the continuing movement of patients through hospitals as health authorities respond to the outbreak.
With more than 141,000 suspected cases recorded since mid-March and the death toll among confirmed and suspected cases approaching 1,000, the latest figures underscore the seriousness of the ongoing measles situation and the need for continued surveillance and timely medical care for affected children.
