Yaba Video Sparks Political Controversy in Bogura

A video circulating on social media has triggered controversy in Bogura’s Dhunat upazila after a local youth political figure was allegedly seen consuming yaba. The footage, which spread widely on Facebook, shows Juhurul Islam Sagor, a leader of the Dhunat branch of the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, reportedly taking the drug while seated inside a room on a bed.

Sagor holds the position of joint convener of Vandarbaria Union Youth Dal. In the video, he is seen sitting casually on a bed placed on a veranda-like space, appearing to consume what is locally identified as yaba, a powerful synthetic stimulant. Another individual is present in the frame, although their face is not clearly visible. However, Sagor’s identity is reportedly distinguishable from the footage.

Local sources claim that allegations of drug use and alleged involvement in drug dealing had previously surrounded Sagor. Despite such claims circulating within the community, residents say few had openly spoken about the matter before the video surfaced. The emergence of the footage has now intensified public discussion in the area, drawing strong reactions from residents and political observers alike.

The incident has also raised questions about internal discipline within local political structures. Dhunat upazila youth leaders stated that the organisation maintains a strict stance against individuals involved in drugs or criminal activities. They confirmed that the video has come to their attention and that initial steps have already been taken at the organisational level.

Jahidul Islam Modhu, general secretary of the Dhunat upazila youth wing, said that no space would be given to drug users or those involved in unlawful activities within the organisation. He further noted that the union committee connected to the matter has already been dissolved, and that a formal investigation is underway. According to him, appropriate organisational action will be taken based on the findings.

Attempts to contact Sagor for his response were unsuccessful as his mobile phone remained switched off at the time of reporting.

The incident has added to ongoing concerns about drug abuse among young people in rural Bangladesh, where yaba consumption has become a persistent social issue. Community members in Dhunat have expressed concern that such incidents, if not addressed decisively, could undermine local social stability and damage the credibility of political youth organisations.
