Measles Outbreak Escalates in Chittagong as Thirteen New Cases Confirmed

An ongoing public health challenge in Chittagong has intensified as 13 additional cases of measles were officially confirmed within a 24-hour window. This latest spike brings the total number of laboratory-verified measles infections across the district to 321. The updated statistics, released on Monday by the district civil surgeon’s office, highlight a worrying concentration of the highly contagious viral disease within urban settings, prompting local health authorities to issue urgent containment advisories.

According to the official report, a substantial majority of the infected population resides within the metropolitan boundaries of Chittagong. Out of the 321 laboratory-confirmed patients, 266 are registered inhabitants of the Chittagong metropolitan area, whilst the remaining 55 cases are scattered across the district’s 15 rural upazilas. This stark disparity underscores the rapid transmission dynamics of the virus in densely populated city neighbourhoods, where close physical contact accelerates the spread of respiratory droplets.

Hospital infrastructure in the region is facing sustained pressure as a steady stream of symptomatic patients seeks admission. Over the identical 24-hour reporting period, 55 individuals displaying distinct symptoms of measles—such as high fever, cough, runny nose, and characteristic skin rashes—were admitted to various medical centres. Currently, 248 patients are undergoing active treatment across various hospitals in the district. Reflecting the urban concentration of the outbreak, 247 of these hospitalised individuals belong to the metropolitan area, with only a solitary patient originating from the rural sub-districts.

Despite the persistent influx of new patients, local medical facilities have reported significant recovery numbers. Sixty-one individuals successfully recovered and were discharged from hospital care over the same 24-hour period. This brings the cumulative number of recovered patients in the district to 3,467, offering some solace to health workers managing the crisis on the ground.

Responding to the escalating situation, the Chittagong District Civil Surgeon, Dr Jahangir Alam, issued a stern appeal to parents and guardians regarding preventative measures. He emphasised the critical necessity of timely childhood vaccinations under the national immunisation programme, which remains the most effective shield against the disease. Dr Alam also urged the public to strictly adhere to hygiene protocols, maintain social distance where possible, and seek immediate medical evaluation at the very first sign of measles symptoms to mitigate further community transmission.
