A brief protest march organised by leaders and activists of the banned organisation Bangladesh Awami League took place in Ramgati Upazila of Lakshmipur on Thursday (16 July), with video footage of the event later circulating widely on social media.
The demonstration was held on a local road in Ramgati and lasted only a short time before participants dispersed. Although the gathering ended quickly, videos shared online drew public attention and prompted a response from local law enforcement authorities.
Footage of the procession shows participants marching behind a banner carrying a written message protesting what it described as a “false case” filed against Sheikh Hasina before the Gopalganj People’s Court and what it referred to as an “illegal ICT Tribunal”. The banner also expressed opposition to what organisers described as injustice and oppression against Awami League leaders and activists in Ramgati Upazila.
During the procession, participants were heard chanting a series of political slogans, including “Joy Bangla”, “Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile”, “We do not fear for Sheikh Hasina, we have not left the streets”, “Your address and mine—Padma, Meghna, Jamuna”, and “In a flood of blood, injustice will be swept away”. Most of those visible in the footage appeared to be young men walking together behind the banner.
According to local sources, the march proceeded for a short distance before ending without any reported clashes or acts of vandalism. No immediate reports of injuries or damage to property emerged following the demonstration.
The circulation of the video on social media quickly brought the incident to the attention of the authorities. Police said they were closely monitoring the situation to prevent any deterioration in law and order.
Ramgati Police Station Officer-in-Charge Liton Dewan said police had adopted a firm stance regarding the matter. He stated that several police teams had been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incidents and to maintain public order.
“We are in a strong position over the issue,” the officer said. “Multiple teams are working on the ground to avoid any unpleasant situation, and local law enforcement agencies remain on alert to prevent any form of disorder.”
Police did not announce any arrests or legal action in connection with the procession at the time of the statement. Authorities said they would continue monitoring developments and take appropriate measures if required under the law.
The incident has generated discussion locally following the circulation of the footage, while law enforcement agencies say they remain vigilant to ensure that the overall security situation in the area remains stable.
