Bangladeshi Worker Dies in Saudi Factory Accident

A Bangladeshi migrant worker from Cumilla’s Burichang Upazila has died after becoming trapped in machinery while working at a date processing factory in Saudi Arabia. The fatal workplace accident occurred on Wednesday (15 July) at around 7:45 p.m. Bangladesh time in the Bukayriyah area of Al-Qassim Province, according to family members.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Nadim Hossain, 27, son of Samad Mia from Jadupur village in Burichang Municipality. His sudden death has left his family devastated and cast a pall of grief over his home village.

Relatives said Nadim had travelled to Saudi Arabia about ten months ago in search of better employment opportunities. He had been working at a date packaging and processing factory in Bukayriyah, where he was supporting his family back in Bangladesh. As the family’s sole earning member, he had taken on the responsibility of meeting household expenses through his overseas employment.

According to the family, the accident occurred while Nadim was cleaning a date processing machine inside the factory. They said he entered the machine as part of the cleaning process when several co-workers outside allegedly activated the equipment unintentionally. Nadim became trapped inside the machinery and sustained fatal injuries, dying at the scene before any assistance could save him.

The family also said Saudi police visited the factory after the incident and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. They added that three factory employees had been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the accident. However, the authorities have not publicly announced any findings, and the investigation remains ongoing.

News of Nadim’s death reached his family in Bangladesh on Thursday, plunging relatives and neighbours in Jadupur village into mourning. Friends, relatives and local residents gathered at the family home to offer condolences, while his parents struggled to come to terms with the loss of their son.

Speaking to reporters, Nadim’s father, Samad Mia, said he suspected that his son’s death may not have been a simple accident. He called for a fair and impartial investigation into the incident and demanded that those responsible, if any wrongdoing is established, be brought to justice. He also appealed to the Bangladeshi government to facilitate the swift repatriation of his son’s body so the family could perform the final rites.

Burichang Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Tanvir Hossain said the local administration was gathering information about the incident. He noted that there are government provisions to bring home the bodies of Bangladeshi citizens who die abroad at state expense. He added that if the victim’s family submits the required application to the relevant authorities, the administration will provide all necessary assistance throughout the repatriation process.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the importance of workplace safety for migrant workers employed overseas. While the investigation continues, Nadim’s family is awaiting both the outcome of the inquiry and the return of his body to Bangladesh.
