A 42-year-old man was detained by local residents after he was allegedly found inside a woman’s home in Gaizpara village of Haribhasa Union, under Panchagarh Sadar upazila. The man, identified as Zahirul Islam, was later handed over to police, who also brought the woman to the police station for questioning.
The incident reportedly took place at around 11pm on Monday, 3 August. According to local residents, Zahirul was found inside the woman’s home and was detained by people in the area. He was subsequently tied to a pillar on the veranda of the house as tensions rose at the scene.
Police arrived after receiving information about the incident. However, officers were reportedly unable to immediately take Zahirul away because of the situation at the location and the presence of an agitated crowd. On Tuesday morning, 4 August, police returned to the area and rescued both Zahirul and the woman before taking them to Panchagarh Sadar Police Station.
The incident has since sparked discussion in the local community, with residents making various claims about Zahirul’s personal life. Some locals alleged that he had previously married four times. They also described him as a supporter of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in the area. However, these claims have not been independently verified by police, and no formal case had been filed in connection with the incident at the time of reporting.
The political affiliation attributed to Zahirul has also become a subject of discussion on social media. However, local leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami reportedly rejected claims that he was a formal member or office-bearer of the organisation. According to their position, Zahirul may have been a supporter of the party, but he did not hold any official post or membership within its organisational structure.
Police said that, as of 3pm on Tuesday, neither party had submitted a written complaint to the police station. In the absence of a formal complaint, no specific legal action had yet been initiated against either person. Police are, however, looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident and will take further steps if a complaint is filed or if any offence is established during the inquiry.
Mokhles, officer-in-charge of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station, said both the man and the woman had been rescued from the scene and brought to the police station. They were still there at the time of reporting.
He said police would take legal action in accordance with the law if a written complaint was submitted.
The incident has also raised questions about the importance of verifying allegations before drawing conclusions. Police are expected to assess the circumstances based on statements from those involved and any available evidence. Until the inquiry is completed, claims made by local residents or discussions on social media cannot by themselves establish criminal liability or confirm any alleged misconduct.
