A clash broke out between activists of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir at Jagannath University on Tuesday, leaving several people injured and prompting heightened security on the campus.
The confrontation reportedly began around noon near the university’s central auditorium, where a programme was being held. According to information from journalists present at the scene, a group of Chhatra Shibir activists carrying placards highlighting various problems facing the university attempted to enter the programme venue. Tensions reportedly escalated over their entry and the display of the placards, eventually leading to pushing, scuffling and a physical confrontation between members of the two student organisations.
The altercation subsequently spread to other parts of the campus, creating an atmosphere of tension among students and those attending the programme.
Among those reportedly injured were Jagannath University Chhatra Shibir president Md Abdul Alim Arif and Yasin Saif, a member of the convening committee of the university’s Chhatra Dal unit. Several other activists from both sides were also said to have sustained injuries. However, there was no immediate confirmation about the severity of the injuries or whether any of those involved required hospital treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the incident unfolded after the chairman of the University Grants Commission arrived on campus at around 11.45am to attend the programme at the central auditorium. The presence of the Chhatra Shibir activists and their attempt to enter the venue with placards reportedly became a point of dispute, leading to a rapid escalation of tensions.
At one stage, Chhatra Dal activists allegedly forced members of Chhatra Shibir to leave the campus. Following the confrontation, Chhatra Dal activists reportedly held a sit-in programme at the site.
The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened attention to political activities and the conduct of student organisations on university campuses. Public universities are expected to maintain an environment conducive to teaching, research and student activities, while clashes between organised groups can disrupt academic life and create anxiety among the wider student community. Disputes surrounding rallies, demonstrations, campus events and the display of political materials can become particularly sensitive when competing organisations seek to assert their presence in the same space.
At around 1.20pm, Motiar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur police station, said the situation on and around the university campus was calm following the clash. Police were monitoring the area to prevent any further deterioration of the law-and-order situation, he said.
The latest incident also comes just a day after a similar confrontation at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur. Activists of Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir reportedly clashed there over the display of a banner at an exhibition organised to mark July Mass Uprising Day. At least seven people were reportedly injured in that incident.
The occurrence of similar clashes at two universities within a short period has renewed discussion about political coexistence on campuses and the need to ensure that student organisations can conduct lawful programmes without violence or intimidation. It has also highlighted the responsibility of university authorities and law-enforcement agencies to respond swiftly when tensions emerge and to prevent disputes from escalating.
As of Tuesday afternoon, details about the treatment of those injured in the Jagannath University clash, any formal complaints filed by either side, and the university administration’s next course of action were not immediately available. Further developments are expected as authorities assess the incident and the situation on campus.
