Late Mbappé Penalty Rescues PSG

Paris Saint-Germain were forced to dig deep on Friday night as a late penalty from Kylian Mbappé secured a narrow 2–1 Ligue 1 victory over Angers at the Parc des Princes. In a match defined by disruption, fatigue and controversy, the French champions overturned a deficit despite being without their South American stars, including Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Mbappé’s decisive moment arrived three minutes from time, when he calmly converted a VAR-awarded spot-kick after Angers defender Pierrick Capelle was penalised for handball. The infringement had initially gone unnoticed by the referee and was only identified following a video review, much to the frustration of the visiting side.

PSG Forced to Rally

The home side had earlier been pegged back after a sluggish opening period, with Angers taking the lead nine minutes before the interval. A swift counter-attack saw Sofiane Boufal deliver an inch-perfect low cross from the right, which Angelo Fulgini converted at the back post to silence the Paris crowd.

PSG responded after the break and eventually found an equaliser midway through the second half. Danilo Pereira rose highest to head home from close range after Mbappé produced a delightful clipped cross from the right flank in the 69th minute.

The goal lifted the hosts, but they still struggled to impose themselves fully against an Angers side that had lost just once prior to this fixture and had arrived in the capital sitting fourth in the table.

VAR Drama Decides the Contest

With seven minutes remaining, Mbappé again proved central to PSG’s attacking threat, racing to the byline and cutting the ball back for Mauro Icardi. The Argentine’s header appeared harmless and was comfortably gathered by Angers goalkeeper Paul Bernardoni.

However, a subsequent VAR review revealed that Capelle’s arm had diverted the ball goalwards, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Mbappé made no mistake, dispatching the penalty emphatically to claim his fifth league goal of the campaign and preserve PSG’s commanding lead at the top of Ligue 1.

For Angers, the manner of defeat was difficult to accept.

“There is no shame in losing here, but not like that — it’s just not possible,” said defender Romain Thomas in an interview with Amazon Prime.

Squad Disruption After International Duty

The victory came under challenging circumstances for PSG, who were deprived of much of their first-choice XI following a demanding international break. Lionel Messi, Ángel Di María and Leandro Paredes had all played in Argentina’s 1–0 World Cup qualifying win over Peru in Buenos Aires less than 24 hours earlier. Neymar, meanwhile, scored for Brazil as they thrashed Uruguay 4–1 in Manaus, with Marquinhos an unused substitute.

As a result, Mauricio Pochettino made seven changes to his starting line-up, handing rare opportunities to the likes of Colin Dagba and Rafinha.

“We were without 80 to 90 per cent of our players during the international break,” said Pochettino. “The players who haven’t played much made a huge effort, and it’s a great three points.

We know Kylian is a great player — one of the best in the world — and he always shows up when the team needs him.”

Momentum Maintained

The win was PSG’s ninth in ten Ligue 1 matches this season, restoring confidence after their defeat at Rennes prior to the international window. The champions now sit nine points clear of Lens at the summit and will hope to welcome their South American contingent back in time for Tuesday’s Champions League clash at home to RB Leipzig.

While PSG may argue that the result was deserved on the balance of play, the narrow margin and controversial ending served as a reminder that even star-studded squads can be vulnerable when rhythm and personnel are disrupted.
