Knife Attack in Demra Robbery Case

A violent robbery in the Konapara area of Dhaka’s Demra has left a local mobile recharge businessman seriously injured after he was attacked with sharp weapons and robbed of nearly two lakh taka. The incident has triggered widespread alarm among residents, who are now demanding stronger security measures and increased police patrols in the neighbourhood.

The victim, 50-year-old Abul Kalam, runs a mobile financial service and recharge outlet named Bonna Telecom near Konapara Bus Stand. According to family accounts, he closed his shop as usual on Thursday night (23 April) and set off on foot towards his residence carrying approximately 200,000 taka in cash, which represented the day’s business earnings.

The attack occurred around 12:30 a.m. near the southern side of Barek Bhaban in the Foodplex area of Konapara. Eyewitness accounts suggest that a group of assailants ambushed him shortly before he reached his home. Without warning, they surrounded him and launched a brutal assault using sharp weapons, striking his head, face, and right ear.

Severely injured and bleeding, Abul Kalam collapsed on the ground and briefly lost consciousness. Although his cries for help alerted nearby residents, the attackers swiftly snatched the cash bag and fled the scene before anyone could intervene.

Local people later rescued him and rushed him to a nearby medical facility. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at approximately 1:45 a.m., where he received emergency treatment.

His son, Al Amin Abran, expressed shock over the incident, stating that his father had been returning home from work as he did every day. He emphasised that the family never anticipated such a brutal attack and urged authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and immediate arrest of those responsible.

A police officer at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital camp confirmed that the injured man was treated in the emergency department and kept under observation before being released to his family after initial care.

Local residents have voiced concern over what they describe as a rising trend of street robberies in the area, allegedly due to inadequate night-time patrols. They have called for urgent reinforcement of law enforcement presence and stricter action against criminal gangs operating in the locality.
